Here's the final animatic for the music video! Sorry there's still no sound on this. I wanna keep it a surprise for you when it's fully complete!

Now comes the part where I figure out which areas I want to fix and push more further, but before I do so I have to figure out the timing for each scene. I think this'll be pretty easy for me considering I've approximately matched each drawing to each specific beat and singing.

Some Jim Smith art that I love...

Look how gorgeous this drawing (above) looks. The solidity and perspective in this are outstanding. This drawing has pure skill and pure talent written all over. You feel as if this character is right in front of you and not as a two-dimensional drawing, but what's cool is that he's NOT drawn as a realistic three-dimensional person. How awesome is that?

Man, I love this Dirty Dog and Cigarretes drawing! I'd love to study Cigarettes' head in this one!

*EDIT* Someone notified me that these ape drawings on the left (above) were done by film director John Ford. The small image on the right though is Jim's take on those apes. Still, the John Ford ones are amazing and fun to look at!

What I love about Jim Smith is that he doesn't bullshit his way through his drawings. By looking at these you can tell that he actually takes the time to think about what he's drawing. They're not half-assed at all. I love the solidity in his drawings and his skills on perspective are amazing! Skills I wish I had. You can really feel the roundness and surfaces of the shapes. I can tell he accentuates the solidity of the shapes in order for you to really feel them. He definitely puts the cartoon and drawing principles to good use in these. Super professional work.

Doin' Some Fixin's!

I've lately been looking a lot at the CD designs I made for my sister's wedding to see what kind of improvements I could make and thought I'd make the composition of the back cover make more sense. There were small things I wanted to fix so I deciced to change 'em real quick and thought I'd share what I've done.

*ORIGINAL*

In the original picture I found that the larger text (the list of songs) were really small and all cramped together. The CD covers were trimmed into their 4.75" x 4.75" size, which is pretty small so I don't think the text would have read too well. I never tested it out, but I've seen a CD cover in that size and thought I made the text too small and too cramped together for that particular size.

*IMPROVEMENTS MADE*

So what I did was strectch down the text more to make it seem bigger and less cramped. I moved the black area of the background down a bit and nudged the text around for it to fit nicely in that area. I then shrunk down a bit the caricatures with the word bubbles to give more focus to the text. I noticed I could've made the area with the caricatures and word bubbles smaller to put more emphasis on the text, but then I would've made the text inside the word bubbles too small, considering the size of paper it is going to be printed on, and it might also make the whole composition feel a little out of balance.

You can flip them back and forth with the arrow keys to see the before and after. You can do so with the new image viewer thing from Blogger.

Doing this really helps me remind myself that the elements in a composition should make sense with not only what they are subjectively, but how they are placed and work together in the composition in a way that they can make sense together and read well as well as look visually interesting, appealing and balanced as a whole for the viewer.

This excercise also helps me see how I myself work and start on something, particularly with figuring out the composition first and spacing of where and why things will be placed in the picture in a way where sense can be made instead of going into it without actually thinking too much about the whole thing, which I hope to never do again. This I think can help me apply what I've learned here into another new illustration.

There's other things in the back cover I'd like to fix, like the dude's head seeming a bit wonky for example, but I wanted to focus more on composition for this one.

The purpose of doing this was to not make the picture be all perfect, but to understand exactly what I'm doing as I'm working on a picture so that the entire thing can make sense for me as well as the viewer.

The Wedding From Outer Space!

Today was my sister's wedding, so this post goes out to her, her husband and their new life together!

I did a CD cover and back cover for some music albums that she and her husband gave out at the wedding reception. Sort of a "thank you for coming" gift to the guests. My sister and her husband came up with the name "The Wedding from Outer Space" for the wedding and we came up with the idea of two aliens getting hitched at a church, with a skinhead, a punk and a mod thrown in the back. My sister and husband love all kinds of music like ska, punk, rockabilly, psychobilly and they themselves picked out all of the songs for the album. They even DJed at the reception.

The title is written in Catalan because the wedding took place in Spain. Me and my family couldn't go to Spain, but we saw the whole wedding and talked and met some people through Skype. You'd think watching a wedding through Skype would be a little weird, but it actually worked out really great! We saw a little bit of the reception where they gave the toast and a friend of my sister's and me showed me the CD album through Skype with my designs and told me she really liked it, which I though was neat-o!

Here's the back cover:

She wanted it to have carcicatures of her and her husband with their cat all saying "Thank You you for coming!" in Catalan.

My sister was originally going to do the designs herself, but she was so busy preparing other stuff for the wedding that I decided it was best I do it all. They were sort of done in the last minute so you might see some mistakes here and there, but I plan to fix them later on for a future portfolio.

It was really cool to see my sissy-poo get married and I know that she'll live an awesome and happy life with her man!

*NOW OTHER STUFF*

Sorry I haven't been putting up anything of the music vid or anything else, but I have have been working on the music vid like a sonuvabitch and will show you you some stuff soon. I also plan to get back to work on other stuff (like my film for instance) as I work on the music vid. I'm usually not very good when it comes to working like that, but I'll try my best to work on different stuff at the same time.

Animated Music Video! Pt. 4

Here's another update on the music vid! I couldn't get around to finishing the animatic as a whole for today, but I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to show it in its entirety for next Saturday, but I ain't gonna make no promises. I just gotta keep on truckin', which is more important.

I only put up what I've done so far this time rather than show everything I've made put together for the animatic.

The scene I'm working on now is a lot more longer than what I thought it would be. That scene starts when he gets all spastic and sticks out his tongue like a crazy person. After that there are two more scenes, but those scenes are of two other scenes that you saw before in the previous animatic clip that will repeat in the end, so I'm pretty close to finishing the animatic.

I'm having a lot of fun animating this. Doing the animatic like this really helps me grasp more exactly what I wanna do for the animation. There's a lot of stuff that I have to fix for when I translate the animatic into the final layouts, keys and animation, which I don't think will be too hard.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

Well, it's not really too important. It's got to do with the music video I'm working on and some stuff about me.

SO! As you know I had planned to finish this whole Halloween music video thing for, well, Halloween, and I can't 100% guarantee that it'll be done by then. In fact I'm pretty sure it won't be done by then. I'll still work on it though, even after Halloween. I'm really happy with where it's going and want it to come out REAL good, so I don't think the time pressure would definitely help me out if I want it to come out exactly how I want it to. Plus this all started out as just for fun anyway, so I don't want to take it too seriously. I'll continue working on it every day and will put up updates on its process every Saturday like I've been doing. I've changed the name of each of the "Halloween Animated Music Video Challenge!" posts to "Animated Music Video!" to not add any confusion.

The reason why I'm doing this is because there's other stuff that I plan and want to do for this month besides just work on the music video. If I work just on the music video for this whole month, I'll feel like I've missed out on other stuff that I'll proabably regret not doing and that I don't want to do for later. Stuff that's gotta do with Halloween, stuff that's gotta do with other people, and stuff for me, like work on my film (something I've been working on for years), do blog posts here and there, make some new drawings, comics, etc.

Sorry for dumping all of this now, but if I wanna live a healthy life and feel happy and free without any weight over me and not having to worry about time, then this is the way to go.

I wish I were a lot more organized when it comes to me and my stuff, so that I can make my life and my work more easy for me. I'm sort of learning and finding out new things about myself when it comes to controlling the stuff I do.

I also want to apologize for not posting in months, but when I do post something now it'll seem like it's something spontaneous, kinda like "Whoa! Where'd he come from? He's doing something else now?" that kind of deal. Maybe that's not how you see it, but I personally see it like that and I don't like it. It's like I've put up stuff about my film months ago and say I will continue working on it and that I'll show you stuff on it later on, but then months will pass without any info and I come back out of nowhere working on something else completely different. To me that seems weird and unfair and I don't want you to think of me as some irresponsible guy who doesn't know how to control his shit. I kinda have this rule where I have to finish what I've started to sort of keep me in control with what I do and I gotta be aware that I don't break it.

Well, I feel pretty good now that I've written this. I feel like I'm now getting closer to having things more under control, which is cool.

Animated Music Video! Pt. 3

Hey! Here's another update on the music video:

It's another clip of the animatic. Sorry it's not the finished animatic like I said I was gonna put up. I'm still working on it, but I'm almost done with it though. I only have two small scenes left to work out and it'll be finally done! So I'm sure for next Saturday I'll put up the finished animatic without the sound.

I wasn't really expecting to work on the animatic so much. I found myself trying to put more animation (not frame by frame, but kinda like the keys and breakdowns) as well as figuring out the layout and spacing of where the character is going to be placed in each shot. I guess I invest in it so much to better prepare myself for when I start the animation. I think once it's done I will immediately jump into the animation.

Well, that's it! I'm sure i could've gone more in-depth with this post, but since I'm still working on the animatic I kinda don't want to repeat what I've already covered in my last post. So come back next Saturday to see more new stuff!

I'll also try to put up an update of other stuff that I've done throughout this year whenever I can!

Animated Music Video! Pt. 2

Hey, peeps! Here's an update on the process of the music video I'm making!

Here's a clip of the animatic I'm currently working on now. It's probably best viewed full screen or watch on YouTube instead of the small screen below.

The reason it has no sound is because I don't want to reveal what the song is yet until the very end when it's all complete. I know it looks a little weird without it, but I wanna keep it a surprise.

The song is from one of my all time favorite bands. It's of course copyrighted material and I DO NOT plan to distribute it for any financial purposes without the band's and company's consent. I'm basically doing this just for fun and it'll be a fan-made type of thing, something that I hope everyone will enjoy :)

The way I started all of this was sort of done in a quick (but not too quick) sort of way, but also controlled. The song is almost 1m and 30s long and the the animation will be done frame by frame. That basically means it's a lot do even though it might not seem like it's that much. I'm also doing this all by myself unless I want to find some help later on. After all, this is a challenge.

Anyway, the first intention I had was to start doing some really basic and really rough storyboards while at the same time make the animatic. Here I didn't want the animatic to just have stiff drawings floating around that went along with the fast and upbeat music. I had to at least make them jump to the beat so that I could have more the feeling of the music and each beat for when I would time the animation. Trying to match each drawing with each beat was pretty hard to do because the song has no strict mechanical beats, and the beats go by pretty fast too. So I had to do the best I could to match the drawings with each beat. I have, though, found that the song has different patterns of beats in different sections of the song that I could at least try to work with for when I matched the drawings to the beats. This all worked out great because this will make it more easy for me for when I start to work more on the timing and animation.

I have to add that I didn't do the storyboards all willy-nilly and fast-paced. I have envisioned the music video many times in my head and felt confident enough to know exactly what to draw for the storyboards. Also, the way I worked out the storyboards was also like working out the layouts for the animation, but at their very, very rough stage. Some I think I will probably use for when I start animating.

So basically everything you see in the video up top is a combination of the storyboards, rough layouts, the animatic with some really basic and rough timing. That's kinda the great thing about doing it all in the computer. It saves up so much time like this instead of doing it all seperately, and I'm doing this all in my own way. But I still have sooooo much to do. I'll put up the animatic when it's all complete. I still have to add him lip syncing to the song (hence why you see him with his mouth open all the time) and work on the areas where he walks.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this small look into the process of how I'm doing this music video! Another update will be posted next Saturday. I hope to start working on final layouts, keys and hopefully animation for next week. I think I'll put up the final animatic next coming Saturday without sound, so you can see how it all came out.

I've been noticing a lot of my online cartoonist/animator friends have recently worked on their own animations and it's been getting me really pumped! I love watching other people's creations and ideas come to life! Knowing that the internet can give people the opportunity to make something they believe in and then show it to the general public without any restrictions is so comforting. I love the internet for that.

Freaked!

This guy's from one of my all time favorite movies: Freaked! It stars Alex Winter (of Bill and Ted fame) as Ricky Coogan. He also co-directed and co-wrote the movie.

I'm never gonna stop loving this movie. It's so fun, weird and original! My kind of movie. Sometimes I can't believe a movie like this even exists. I've watched it a million times and never gets old. Not that many people know about it though, and that's because not that many people liked it, but I've known it to be sort of a love it or hate it kind of movie. It's like one of those underrated, campy cult films.

It's got tons of eye candy and has lots of really cool and funny gags (the majority of them being corny and bizarre, but I still find them enjoyable). And I'm not just talking about written gags, it's got tons of visual gags too. That's the kind of balance I like in comedy. Nowadays, I feel like there's more written stuff now, which is totally fine, but I feel like a lot of it doesn't give any room to put in some visual humor. Most of the humor in the movie is kinda slapstick-y/impossible humor, which is the kind I love. It has its own brand of humor that I've never seen before.

The settings, costumes and makeup are pretty cool too. It's got some really weird characters, like a guy with a sock for a head, a sexy pinhead and two giant Rastafarian eyeballs wearing cartoon gloves with machine guns.

I mean, c'mon, how cool is that, right? I dunno about you, but it's cool to me!

Really worth checking out if you're into really crazy movies like this. It's not really for everyone just so you know. I've known people who've gotten irritated from watching this, with its corny gags and extreme crack-induced subject matter, but if you've got a good sense of humor and are pretty open-minded about stuff like this, then definitely check it out. It really isn't that bad!

Nicki Clyne Fan 'Zine!!!

A New Face...

For a new year!

*EDIT:

I wanted to mention that I've got a lot of really cool things that I wanted to do that I'll be showing and mentioning here for this year!

First off, I don't think I'll be able to finish all those Halloween drawings like I wanted. I could still finish them, but it wouldn't make sense to finish something that was made intentionally for Halloween of last year, especially when this year has just started, and I don't think anyone cares if I finish them off or not. I just wanted to show something fun while having fun making those drawings, which I think I pulled off just fine :)

For this year, I basically want to get back into animating again and finally finish my film! I've been meaning to get into it last year, which I kind of did for a tiny bit over the summer, but I'm seriously gonna get more involved with it this year. I really want to get it done and also plan to do more new things with the characters from the film. Probably not animation-wise, but I was thinking more along the lines of doing a small comic book with them, but I'll see how that goes. First, I gotta finish that film!

Speaking of comics, I'm definitely gonna get back on track with some more Zad Zak & Angree Dandee comics. I had planned to do them weekly for every Saturday, but I think I'm just gonna do as much comics as I can from now on and do them one at a time whenever I can, but that's all gonna happen after I finish my film of course. I'd like to actually make a ZZ and AD comic book by this year and hopefully sell some, but I'll see how that goes as well.

I also want to get a portfolio website done for myself to hopefully land some jobs by this year. It'll be something simple and will showcase some of my best work I've been putting here for the past 6 years! Wow, 6 years! How time flies!!!

Man, I'm so excited! I think I got a lot of really cool things I wanna do heading my way. It sounds like a lot, but all I gotta do is stay dedicated and actually DO the things I mentioned above. There's gonna be some things that will probably get in the way from what I want to do, but I'll do my best to get the things I want done for this year. There are also other million things I'd like to do for this year, but basically the stuff I mentioned above are the main things I'll be focusing on.

I had a really great Halloween time this year. I saw some really great scary/funny movies both on the big screen and little screen, went to a Halloween parade, where I was dressed up and had a blast, carved some pumpkins and helped decorate a front porch with fun Halloween stuff!! I've never experienced such an awesome Halloween before and it was the best one I've had so far!!

Hope you guys had an awesome Halloween as much as I did!!!

P.S. Just so you know I'm still gonna finish all my Halloween drawings! I've only got 15 more to go and really want to reach the goal of 31 drawings!! So stay tuned for those!

Drawings For Halloweeners!

Hey, I think this is as far as I'll go for the Halloween drawings for this month. I do plan to finish all 31 drawings though and I've got 15 more to go, so I'm gonna keep going!! I'll do another special one for tomorrow for Halloween. It'll be a simple one and not as complex as my last drawings. I'll also put up photos of the pumpkins I've carved later on.

I got inspired to do a "Mars Attacks!" drawing after seeing Bob Flynn's take on one of the "Mars Attacks!" trading card series and after seeing the complete set of those cards here. Check out Bob's piece here, where he also provides a brief step-by-step process of his piece, and here's the original card he took it from. It's really cool how he was able to incorporate his own fun style into his piece yet still maintain the quality of the original. I also love the painterly look that he was able to achieve through the painting program Artrage. I seriously have to get that program!

I also found another website in Bob's blog where he contributed his "Mars Attacks!" piece called Illostribute and there I found some some other cool "Mars Attacks!" art from two other artists! Click on their names below to see their awesome "MA!" art!

Sorry it's taking me forever to put up any new Halloween drawings! I'm definitely gonna catch up though! I've been feeling kinda burnt-out lately due to some stuff I've been doing on the side, so I decided to take a mini break from drawing.

But now I'm back to do more and I came up with a cool way to catch up with all of the October drawings I've missed! So what I'll basically do, starting tomorrow, is do two drawings a day instead of one to catch up for the days I've missed. So expect two Halloween drawings each day starting tomorrow until I've reached all 31 drawings!! Capiche?

P.S. I know it should probably say "Fiends Without Faces!", but this way feels right to me :)

Hey, everyone! New comic over at the blog ---> ZZ & AD Comics!

Sorry I was so late to put it up if you were waiting for it. I was really busy working on some freelance stuff last week :/

I started doing the comic on Friday and had it in mind to do it quickly for the next day, but I really liked how it was coming out that I really didn't want to half-ass it. So that's why it took me a while to do.

Go to the blog, leave a comment if ya want, and tell me what you think! I'm sorta new to comic making so any professional opinions would be highly appreciated!

Last week I was working on a hefty poster for the Festival of the Lion King for Disney World. I was asked to do it from my good friend Jason Anders of Fulle Circle fame, who works there. Go to his blog now and read his super awesome interviews!!!

I'm still working on the poster too, so for the next two weeks to come I probably won't be doing any comics, or drawings, or anything me :(

I gotta put in some heavy-duty time for this poster if I want it look nice, but I'll try to finish it early so I can show do more comics and things ;)

Hey!! Sorry for the extensive wait. I was having sort of a mini vacation time for myself, but now I'm back!!

Remember when I mentioned I wanted to do a comic of two of my characters from two posts down? Well that's what I've been up to! I'll also be doing a comic a week of them and made a blog especially for the comics!

Am I crazy for doing this? A comic a week? Maybe! But it's something that's been floating around my head for quite some time and I've been really wanting to do it, and I think I can too. So go check out the blog and tell me what you think! Let me know if you'd like to see more!

I was working on this REALLY slow too, and that's because I did the whole thing in Flash, inking and all. Except the word bubbles were done in Illustrator. Inking in Flash takes forever, but I actually prefer inking there. It makes my drawings seem more organic I think. But for the next ones to come I'll be inking them in Illustrator that way I can crank 'em out faster.

The comics come out every Saturday! Expect the next one to come out next Saturday of next week!

I'll be back soon with other stuff and I'm gonna be sprucing things up for this blog too! So expect some CHANGES!!!

Drawing Dump & Some Other Things

Hey! Long time no see!! Sorry I haven't put anything up here in like 2 months. I've been crazy busy doing a commission for someone really cool, but I think I'll save that for another post.

Right now, I thought I'd put up some drawings I've done in the past few months. Most of these I've put up already in Facebook and Deviant Art, but have totally neglected putting them here for you bloggers out there. So here ya go! Sum stuff fer yoo too<---(purposeful misspelling) watch!
Here's something I've been meaning to mention here for a long, long, LONG time now, especially to any artist out there, budding or professional.

The drawing below was made after I read a series a of posts from this blog by Mark Kennedy, who's a storyboard artist for animation and movies. I'm sure some of you are familiar with it, but in case you aren't then please check it out. It's definitely worth a check if you want to learn some good tips on drawing from a professional who knows the tricks of the trade!

The posts are in 5 parts and each have the header "A Kick in the Head".

Here they are at your convenience: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

They're all pretty great and I think provide enough information that an artist needs to know.

In the first one he talks about silhouette value, but more specifically on clarity and to avoid cluttered design. After I read it, I came to realize that silhouetting isn't only for the sake of having clarity and interesting design in your drawing, but also for the sake of comfort for the viewer and for the artist as a viewer. They have to and want to know what they're looking at immediately when they set their eyes on a drawing.

And it makes sense, right? You wouldn't want the viewer to try and figure out what the cluttered mess is all about in your drawing. Don't confuse them from the get-go. Let them know exactly what you're drawing is all about without bringing any confusion to them. Clutter provides discomfort if ya ask me. So avoid it all costs!!

So anyway, in the drawing below I decided to redo the drawing on top, to a more clear and easy-to-read drawing.

I wanted people to immediately know that he was forcefully loosening his tie in a manic way. So I took his hand away from his chest, arched back his line of action more in the other direction, turned his head so that it compliments with the direction that his hand's going to, and added more motion lines and sweat. By applying a silhouette to this character, I've made my drawing not only clearer, but I think more expressive too.

Sometimes I forget the stuff I learn, like silhouettes, from some really talented and professional artists like John K. and Mark Kennedy. So I think it's always important to practice the things you've learned all the time in order to not forget them and if you want to make some good, clear and expressive drawings.

Skadi!!! I love Skadi! It's an online comic made by two of my favorite artists, Katie Rice and Luke Cormican!! I was asked to do a drawing for them in an upcoming Skadi book and it was a real honor for them to ask me! I love their stuff!! I liked doing the drawing so much that I decided to do another one just for fun and it's going to be included in the book too! Here it is below:

She's a devil here along with her sickly slave Diseasoid (well devil Diseasoid as portrayed here). It'll make sense once the book is out, so that you can see why she's a devil!!

Hey!! Here's some new stuff I've been doing!

These are some pages I made for Jason Anders' Fulle Circle Magazine!! Each page indicates a subject in the magazine, that's why they have titles like "Film & Television", "Music", etc.

Here's a caricature I did for Caprica star Alessandra Torresani! Jason did an interview with her and you can check it out HERE!

She saw this and liked it! I'm real glad she did too. She assumed every celebrity that Jason interviews would get a caricature from an artist, so she wanted one. That's pretty cool, right? It's real awesome for cartoonists to get noticed like that.

Hey, peeps!! Here' some new stuff I've been workin' on...

Here's a new painting I did! I plan on selling it too along with some prints of the same image. I created an Etsy account so I can sell all that stuff there. The prints will be giclee prints so you'll know they'll be extra special!

The prints will be a limited offer too! But I still gotta organize some stuff with my Etsy account like creating a store, so I'll let ya know when they're ready!

I plan on making more paintings like the one above. So let me know if you guys like the idea or would wanna buy some special paintings from me!

I drew these while watching some of their shorts and I also saw a cool Marx Bros. movie Called "Duck Soup" that a friend of mine brought. Super crazy and hilarious movie! Go check it out if you haven't!

All those old comedians were SUPER CARTOONS! Not only with witty and funny dialogue, but were also very visually appealing characters. Cartoonists back then must've had fun caricaturing them. I wish we had today what those old comedians did.

What I've Been Up To!

Hey, everyone! Sorry I haven't updated anything in a while, but it's for good reason! And I bring you proof!

First off, after doing all the Halloween drawings I got invited to John K.'s Cartoon College blog and I couldn't miss out on the opportunity to learn some great stuff on cartoon drawing!

Also, I did some illustrations for my awesome friend Jason Anders, creator of Fulle Circle Productions, which is an online magazine with some great and inspiring interviews from some of the most talented people out there! Go to the website for some interviews! It's definitely worth a check!

Jason has asked me to do a promo for Fulle Circle to promote a magazine he's doing so that one day Fulle Circle Magazine can make it to magazine stands!

The first one was so much fun to do that I couldn't resist doing another promo!

Jason also wanted me to do another promo pic to present Fulle Circle's "Entertainer of the Year" Award!

I did some inking as well as fixing up some drawings for a friend of mine's comic, which is his thesis project. They were all inked in Flash.

It's mainly a comic about him growing up and how certain things he's grown up with have influenced him to become the person he is today. Here's a peek at what it looks like!

I could've done a better inking job I think, like maybe adding shadows. I've never inked anything that's not a cartoon drawing, so really I don't know a lot when it comes to inking serious drawings like the ones shown above, but my friend still liked them. Inking is one of the many things I really want to improve on along with comic making.

And last, but not least...I'm moving to Vermont! Why Vermont? I'm staying with a friend, Matt, up there and he's gonna help me get some stuff started for me and I'll be doing the same for him.

He's a filmmaker and he needs help with some stuff and in return he'll help me with my film! The one film I've been working on forever! I still haven't given up on that! I will definitely finish it and put it up on the web once I'm done!

Matt is an expert filmmaker and knows all the tricks of the trade! He's even going to help me with sound design and editing for the film! Whatta cool guy Matt is! Matt also has some great artistic talent. He actually gets it from his Dad, who's a great painter! Go to my links section and click on Tom Merwin a.k.a Matt's Dad!

Vermont is actually like the first step for me though, I kinda want to go to California and find some jobs there as well as meet some of the best cartoon people out there! If not California then either New York or Canada, but my main preference is Cali. I gotta find a job first though in Vermont to make that happen. I'm anticipating how things might turn out for me whether it be good or bad. Hopefully all good!

So as you can see (aside from all the illustrating) I've been preparing like crazy before I move up there leaving me kinda busy with a lot of stuff.

But I'm totally excited to see how things will turn out for me in this brand new year!!

Isn't Jack Nicholson one of the coolest actors out there? He was made for the role as Jack Torrance in The Shining. He was so evil and mysterious in that role, but his performance was absolutely incredible! Also, one of my favorite Kubrick films. To me he's probably the best dramatic actor out there. No one can top him as far as I know.

Here's the picture I used as a reference. I think it's where he rises up after he kills the cook, who came to the rescue to save the wife and child. My drawing doesn't do any justice to it though. It's such a striking picture! Love the expression on his face. I was actually trying to caricature him a bit and make him seem a bit more cartoony, but I didn't like how it looked so I went for a semi-realistic almost caricatured look in my drawing and wanted to capture the scariness that the picture portrayed.

A Freak, A Geek, and Some Animation!

Here's an animation I worked on for a while. It's unfinished, but I'll get around to it once I'm done with my film.

This is actually for another film that me and a friend had started last year and I thought I could multitask on two different films, but it kinda became impossible for me and it was beginning to hold me back a lot on my first film, which is the main focus for what I wanna do right now.

Anyway, here it is! The quality is kinda rusty, but still visible. Hope you like it!

Howie Post/John K -- Hierarchy and Composition Study

Yo, peeps! Here's a study that John K. wanted people to try out, so I wanted to try my hand at this...

Here's how I did it:

1) The First Level of Forms

Alright, so in order for me to figure out the composition of the entire drawing I had to break down the drawing into bigger forms. This also helped me how to measure out all the proportions of each big shape in order for my drawing to seem accurate with the original.

I condensed the details of every object in the original drawing like the trees, hill, clouds, and bushes and made them into bigger shapes focusing more on the outside forms that create the shape of each object. I didn't do the horse, kid and silhouette of the wolf 'cause they're smaller and more detailed forms. Those, I felt, had to come later. I had to focus on the bigger forms to concentrate more on the composition of the entire drawing so that everything can read clear for me.

Once I felt like I had all the bigger forms placed proportionately right, I then brought my drawing and the original into Photoshop and made a transparency...

2) The Second Layer of Forms

Now that I fixed my proportions for each bigger form, I then started on my sub forms within each of the bigger forms. The sub forms are a bit smaller and create an outline on top of the smaller details that are inside the bigger forms. This helped me know where and how the details were going to be put together. Here I felt the horse, elf and wolf is where they needed to be, but I only made the outside forms for each one.

3) The Third Layer of Forms

Once I'm confident enough with how my drawing looks, I add in all the details, which add more to the sub forms and bigger forms making them look more subjective rather than unrecognizable objects, but I still made sure everything made up a clear composition to make things read well in the picture.

It didn't come out too perfect from the original, but I feel like the accuracy is sorta there.

I actually liked how it came out and learn a lot from this! I should definitely try doing these studies more often. I always forget how much I learn from copying and studying just one drawing. I gotta keep going before I forget what makes cartoon a CARTOON!

Hey, everyone! It's mah birfday today and I thought I'd share some thoughts with you on the subject.

I've always been kinda shy whenever my birthday comes up and I've been thinking that now I should break away my from my shyness bubble and say that I should have a well-deserved day today. Hell, I think everyone should deserve a great day whenever their birthdays come up. So I'm here to say to myself, "Way to go, Pedro! You've passed another year without doing any harm to yourself (or harm brought onto you) and that you're doing a terrific job with your work! Keep at it!"

Speaking of work I'll put some more stuff from my film here soon, I promise. I'm now working on another film that me and a friend started last summer so I'm sort of simultaneously doing both films at the same time. So I'm really busy, but I'm really excited how they're coming out so far!
